Malawi President Peter Mutharika Pardons 503 Prisoners The Malawi President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has issued an order to release 403 prisoners as part of 50 years of independence celebrations, The Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security has announced . According to the press statement issued by the ministry, it has pleased His Excellency the State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika to pardon 403 prisoners. “The 403 prisoners who have been pardoned are those who have served at least half of their prison sentences, with good behaviour and were not convicted of serious offences. The pardoning of the 403 prisoners is a symbol of forgiveness as the country commemorates its Golden Jubilee of Independence. Meanwhile the independence celebrations is currently taking place in the capital city and his Excellency the State President is leading the nation in celebrating these Republic and Independence celebrations. This year’s celebrations are unique in that we will be commemorating 50 years of our independence. The celebrations start with a National Service of Worship at the Bingu International Conference Centre in Lilongwe. Later the celebrations will move to Civo Stadium where there will be a joint military parade to be mounted by the Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police Service and Malawi Prisons Service and Immigration Department. There will also be traditional dances and later a football match between Malawi and Mozambique national football teams. Those attending the activities at Civo Stadium are requested to be seated by 11:30am.
