Malaysia targets a 10 per cent rise in pepper exports this year compared to last year, Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Douglas Unggah Embas said. Last year, he said, the country exported 21,105 metric tonnes of pepper worth RM273.3 million, while expressing optimism that the export target of RM650 million by 2020 could be achieved. “We believe this year’s target is attainable with the growing market for the commodity, reflected in the current encouraging prices for black and white pepper of RM20,800 and RM30,800 per metric tonne respectively,” he told reporters. It was attended by State Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Committee chairman Ismail Mohamed and Malaysian Pepper Board chairman Datuk Henry Sum Agong. Malaysia is the world’s fifth largest pepper producer, while Japan, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Western Europe and South Korea are the biggest markets.
