Malcolm X started as a Follower of the Teachings of The Honorable Elijah Muhammad. He was a member of the Nation Of Islam After he left the NOI, many would classify him as an Orthodox Sunni Muslim due to his Hajj to Mecca in 1964 and this can be seen by his transition from Malcolm X to El Hajj Malik El Shabazz. However, Malcolm was known to study the Sufi Traditions of West Africa and proudly accepted the title "Omowale" that the Yoruba brothers and sisters of Nigeria bestowed on him. I wont get into a needless argument over whether he was a legitimate Orthodox Sunni or a Traditional Sufi, because that much is not relevant. What is relevant is the fact that he was a Black Muslim, a student of African culture and a Pan-Africanist in ideology. Yes he made a ton of horrendous mistakes in his life that many of us choose to frown upon but overall he will always remain as a Powerful leader and a true example for African Excellency and we shall always remember him as such. -PTH I
