Mamata promises Rs 2,200 crore investment in north Bengal North Bengal clubs to benefit from government benevolence SILIGURI, 19 Jan 2015: Inaugurating the North Bengal Industry Meet in Siliguri on Monday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee informed that there are investment proposals amounting to Rs 2, 200 crore in several sectors in North Bengal by the various investors. Investment will be made in eco-tourism, plastic industry, tea and tourism. Speaking before investors representing north Bengal,Sikkim, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh Mamata invited all to invest in north Bengal as it was the gateway to the north east and surrounded by several nations and strategic locations for business. She also said that she will visit after every six months at Uttarkanya to monitor the work and the projects and finance minister Amit Mitra will visit every threemonths. Mamata inaugurated a single window system for Micro Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) and a revision office of Sales Tax for North Bengal. Meanwhile, the ruling Trinamool Congress seems to be poised to extend to north Bengal the politics of distributing doles to expand its support base even when the exchequer of the state is empty and state government employees are irate that their pending dearness allowance instalments have not been paid. An HS report said on Monday quoting North Bengal Development Minister Gautam Deb that the state government was set to provide Rs 1 lakh each to 100 clubs of north Bengal during the opening ceremony of Uttar Banga Utsav, in addition to some more amount to clubs which had already benefitted from similar largesse in the past. The festival would be inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the Kanchanjunga stadium in Siliguri on Tuesday. “One hundred clubs working for various causes around the north Bengal region will receive 1 lakh rupees each as a reward for their benevolent endeavor. The clubs, which had received Rs 50,000 last year, would get Rs 25,000 more after they submit their utilisation certificates,” said Deb. Apart the clubs, a total of 100 poor, but brilliant students will be provided with Rs 10,000 each. Additionally, table tennis champion Ankita Das will be given Rs 1 lakh, heptathlete Swapna Barman, who had participated in the Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, last year, will be given Rs 50,000, shooter Guria Roy will also be rewarded with cash, along with 10 gymnasts who will be given Rs 10,000 each, he further said. During the weeklong event, movies will be screened, dramas and yatras will be staged, and other cultural programmes will be held, while it will also feature a T-20 cricket tournament, volleyball matches and sit-and-draw competitions. “We are expecting around 15,000 participants in the competitions and that would be an all time record, added Deb. The movies to be screened include Byomkesh Phire Elo, Oscar award winner Life of Pie, Vertical Limit and Adventure of Tintin. Noted singer Usha Uthup will also perform during the inaugural ceremony. The cast of ‘Byomkesh Phire Elo’ will attend the Siliguri Marathon 2015 on 23 January. The marathon is a part of the festival, said the minister. The festival will be held in 32 venues of north Bengal and continue till January 26. [EOI]
