Just another night on the road.......as Metallica might say! I thought after all these years there would be few things to surprise me and cause me to blow a fuse........I was wrong, incompetence is a degree course for some, I will expand when I hang up my goggles..... Anyways heading into Lome in Togo tonight we are heading for the approach to R/W22, our southerly track takes us towards the initial approach fix, although our compass shows us we are heading due north, well it hasnt worked for....ATC asks us to slow down because of a departure.....but we are 30 miles out......but its Air France, so best we do! No ILS not working, well why would it this is Africa after all, so an RNAV approach to a runway which has slightly more lights than my daughters push bike....just. Passing 1000 feet, multiple fire system failures followed by fire warnings, bells and lights......time to get on the ground, so at a few kilos below our maximum landing weight of 295 tonnes and an approach speed of 160 knots, my fabulous copilot simply says..cancel the bells and proceeds to grease our tired old bird onto the black hole which is the runway in Lome. Laurel and Hardy seem to have been resurrected to marshall us in, which results in them running around like rabid break dancers with their wands.....a B747 doesnt have wing mirrors, so dont run behind us and expect me to follow your instructions, well after two loops on the ramp, I gave up, stopped and parked. Time for a beer! I love this job......its just a complete hoot!
