DecemberKabbalah i 1 Vote Kabbalah - originates from the Hebrew root Qof-Beit-Lamed, meaning “to receive, to reveal.” The word is usually translated as “tradition.” The structure of the Kabbalah is referred to as the Tree of Life because it is designed to help man receive and reveal his divine nature. What was forbidden to Adam and Eve after eating from the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. Zohar – is a group of books including commentary on the mystical aspects of the Torah (the five books of Moses) and scriptural interpretations. The Zohar contains a discussion of the nature of God, the origin and structure of the universe, the nature of souls, redemption, the relationship of Ego to Darkness and “true self” to “The Light of God,” and the relationship between the “universal energy” and man. The Zohar says that Aramaic is “the reverse side of Hebrew,” the hidden side of Hebrew. The Zohar explains that human development is divided into 6,000 years, souls undergo a continuous process of development in each generation. At the end of the process souls reach a position of the highest level of spirituality and wholeness. Torah – contains many stories of mystical experiences, from visitations by angels to prophetic dreams and visions. Talmud – considers the existence of the soul and when it becomes attached to the body. The Talmud contains vague hints of a mystical school of thought that was taught only to the most advanced students and was not committed to writing. Legend of the Kabbalah - The Kabbalah was first given to the angels before God created the world. The tree of life is a tree planted by God in midst of theGarden of Eden, whose fruit gives everlasting life, immortality. “Together with the tree of life, God planted the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (Genesis 2:9). The biblical account states that Adam and Eve were exiled from the Garden of Eden after eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil to prevent them from eating from the tree of life thereby relinquishing their divinity. By questioning God’s word and authority, the serpent, initially tempted Eve by suggesting that eating the fruit would cause her to become as wise as God, having knowledge of good and evil. Eve ate the fruit, against God’s command to Adam and later so did Adam, despite God’s warning. As a consequence, the land, the Serpent, Adam and Eve were each cursed by God. And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” (Genesis 3:22) Raziel - is the “Keeper of Secrets” and the “Angel of Mysteries.” Raziel sat so close to the throne of God that he heard all of the universes secrets, which he wrote down. He gave his book to Adam as he was leaving Eden and to Noah as he was building the Ark. The Kabbalah describes Raziel as the embodiment of Divine Wisdom. Enoch – (Ezekial) (Idris) (Metatron/Shekinah) – was a Sumerian Prophet known as the seventh generation grandchild of Adam. After wandering in the desert of Sumeria (Iraq) he received visions from Angels “watchers” in the form of a Merkaba (a chariot to the Gods), eventually Enoch ascended and became known as the Angel Metatron (male aspect) or as Shekinah (female aspect), the one who speaks for God. Enoch was also seen as the great grandfather to Noah. The Book of Enoch is a part of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church’s canon. The first part of the Book of Enoch describes the fall of the “watchers”, the angels who fathered the Nephilim and Enoch’s visits to Heaven in the form of travels, visions and dreams, and his revelations. Abraham - was told to leave Sumeria and travel to Caanen by the Archangel Metatron/Shekinah and to visit a King named Melchidezek in Salem (Jerusalem) there Abraham was initiated into the Kabbalistic mystery teachings by Melchizedek. (Melchizadek is seen by some as the incarnation of Metatron in human form.) The Kabbalah was part of the covenant that God made with Abraham. Later it is Metatron/Shekinah who come to Abraham to tell him not to sacrifice Isaac. Moses - went to Mount Sinai to meet God. The first time Moses went up he received the 10 Commandments. The second time he went up he received the Kabbalah. Kabbalists refer to the Mosaic encounters as the outer and inner teaching. The first encounter of Moses with God is when he received the 10 Commandments. This is called the outer teaching. It was upon the second encounter with God that Moses received the Kabbalistic truths. This is referred to as the inner teaching. Written History of the Kabbalah 135 AD – Rabbi Akiva and his disciples were tortured and killed by the Romans, who felt threatened by his teachings of the Kabbalah. Many of these teachings were asserted to be secret and ancient. 150 AD – Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, a student of Rabbi Akiva was authorized to teach future generations the Kabbalah as it had been taught to him. Rabbi Akiva hid with his son, Elazar in a cave. 163 AD – Akiva and Elazar emerged from the cave with The Zohar, and with a crystallized method for studying Kabbalah and achieving spirituality. The Zohar tells us that he and his son reached the level called “Eliyahu the Prophet,” meaning that the Prophet himself came to teach them. The Zohar is written as parables in Aramaic. 1250 AD – The first publication by Rabbi Moshe de Leon, in the 13th century in Spain. 1570 AD – The first time the pure language of Kabbalah appeared was in the writings of the Ari. The Ari proclaimed the start of a period of open mass study of Kabbalah. 1953 AD – Baal HaSulam finished writing his commentary of The Zohar in 1953. He died the following year and was buried in Jerusalem at the Givat Shaul cemetery. Originally, only Jewish men who were at least 40 years old could study Kabbalah. Structure of the Kabbalah Ein Sof - According to the Kabbalah, the true essence of God is so transcendent that it cannot be described, except with reference to what it is not. This true essence of God is known as Ein Sof, which literally means “without end,” which encompasses the idea of his lack of boundaries in both time and space. In this truest form, the Ein Sof is so transcendent that it cannot have any direct interaction with the universe. The Ein Sof interacts with the universe through ten emanations from this essence, known as the Ten Sefirot. The Kabbalah is commonly known as the Tree of the Sefirot or the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. There is great significance to the position of these various attributes and their interconnectedness. Supernal Sephiroth - are the first three Sephiroth, considered to be the primordial energies of the Universe. The Supernal Sephiroth exist on a plane of divine energy. This is why another correspondence for Binah is the idea of suffering, because the Supernal Maternal energy gives birth to a world that is inherently excluded from that Divine Union. Abyss - are the next stages of evolution on the Tree of Life considered to exist beyond a space on the tree between the Supernals and the other Sephiroth, because their levels of being are so distinct from each other that they appear to exist in two totally different realities. Creation – the Universe uses the materials it will need to fulfill its evolution, and creates new combinations of those materials until it is so dense that, by the stage of Malkuth, the initial pure limitless energy has ‘solidified’ into the physical Universe. Since its energies are the basis of all Creation, the Tree of Life can potentially be applied to any area of life, especially the inner world of Man, from the subconscious to the higher self. After the energy of Creation has condensed into matter, it is thought to reverse its course back up the Tree until it is once again united with its true nature. Thus, the Kabbalist seeks to know himself and the Universe as an expression of God, and to make the journey of return by stages charted by the Sephiroth, until realization. Attaining Daat – all sephirot exist in their perfected state of infinite sharing. The three sephirot of the left column that would receive and conceal the Divine Light, instead share and reveal it. Since all sephirot radiate infinite self-giving Divine Light, it is no longer possible to distinguish one sefira from another. Thus they are one. Divine Light is always shining, but not all humans can see it. The concealment or revelation of the Divine Light shining through Daat does not actually happen in Daat itself. It only seems that way from the human perspective within Malkuth. The perception of change can only occur in Malkuth. Humans who become self-giving like the Light become able to see it, and for them the benefits of Daat’s Light seem “revealed”. Sefirot correspond to qualities of God and Man in the form of Angels and are related to the Chakras or energy centers within the spiritual/human body. 8. The “Chayot” have four faces, corresponding to the four directions (north, east south and west). The faces are a man, a lion, an ox and an eagle. Each Chayot also has four wings. Two wings spread across the length of the chariot and connect with the wings of the angel on the other side. This creates a ‘box’ of wings that forms the perimeter of the chariot. The other two wings cover their body. “Ophanim” are angels shaped like wheels, described as “a wheel inside of a wheel. The face of the man is always on the east side and looks up at the “Likeness of Man” who drives the chariot. The “Likeness of Man” sits on a throne of sapphire. The Bible mentions a third type of angel found in the Merkaba called “Seraphim”. The “Seraphim” power the chariot. The “Ophanim” are controlled by the “Chayot” while the movement of the “Chayot” is controlled by the “Seraphim”.
