Manila Bulletin, SPORTS NEWS PG 17 BASEBALL HEAD NAVASERO DIES by Clyde Mariano Hector Navasero,president of the Philippine Baseball Association and one of the most controversial sports leaders, died Tuesday at the Makati Medical Center where he was confined for three weeks after suffering a stroke. He was 78. At the time of his death, Navasero, president and founder of a drug company known as PHILAB, had been president of the baseball association for 27 years. No other NSA president had served longer. Navasero had been a fixture in Philippine sports and was known to regale strangers and sports aficionados at various international events with magic tricks. He also had a long feud with the Philippine Olympic Committee which wanted him to resign. Havasero, however, kept being elected since most of the time. He was known to bankroll teams to various tournaments. His strong connections with the international baseball federation also helped his cause. Under his leadership, baseball was played in the Southeast Asian Games where his teams won two gold medals. Navasero also guided the Philippine team to the Asian BaseballDivision II title by beating Pakistan in Karachi and a slot in the qualifier of the major Lerague Baseball-initiated World Baseball Classic. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wake of Hector C. Navasero is at Ellinwood Church, Malate. His body will be there beginning 9am today, Oct. 2. Wake scheds from Oct. 2, 3 & 4 with nightly service at 8:30 pm by Rev. Desleta. On Oct. 5, Saturday morning his body will be wilowed to the Church Among the Palms inside the UPLB campus whereafter the 10 am service will be interred at the Los Banos Cemetery.
