Many of our female patients complain about acne breakouts and oily skin problems during pregnancy. The common question that arises is, are acne products safe to use in pregnancy? as it is understood that pregnant women want to look their best but not at cost of possible risk to their baby. Topical acne medications with salycilic acid for smaller areas such as face (as apposed to face chest and back) act locally with have minimal systemic levels and are safe to use during pregnancy. Hydroquinone for pigment correction, has relatively high systemic absorption rate and is therfore contraindicated in pregnancy. Tretinoin, for which the evidence is controversial, should not be used in pregnancy. Consequently, in most cases women can control acne during pregnancy with topical acne products with salicylic acid without compromising the safety of their unborn child. As always, please check with your OB doctor before using ANY medication, even topical.
