Mary Sneed 1927 - 2015 | Obituary | Condolences Mary Sneed Obituary Mary Elizabeth Sneed 1927-2015 Mary Elizabeth Betty Sneed, the former Mrs. Curtis Roy Hunt, Jr., passed away the 6th of January 2015 after a long battle with Alzheimers. Betty was born in Houston the 2nd of July 1927. She was the daughter of Albert Cravens Sneed and Electa Grace Galloway Sneed. Betty graduated from Galena Park High School, where she was class Valedictorian, a member of the band and a member of the debate team. Betty continued her education at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Cum Laude in Religion and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Betty received her Master of Education degree from University of Houston and also attended Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee. Betty began her teaching career at Port of Houston in 1947 and taught at HISD for over forty five years. She taught at the elementary level, Spanish, Bi-lingual and ESL. A list of other area schools in which she taught include: Peck, Kelso, Southmayd, Brookline, Lewis, Mitchell, Henderson, Tijerina, Cunningham, Golfcrest and Whittier. Betty also taught at the American School in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria and Canary Island, Spain for two years. Betty was a member of the following professional organizations: National Association of Professional Teachers, Association of Texas Professional Educators, Congress of Houston Teachers as a past Vice President and Alpha Delta Kappa Professional Teachers Sorority as a past Chapter President and past Chapter Treasurer. Betty was a member of the Lady Washington Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the John Champion Chapter, National Society Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century as a past Chapter President, other various chapter offices and chairmanships and the Jefferson Davis Chapter #1637 United Daughters of the Confederacy. Betty enjoyed sailing and scuba diving and spent time in her retirement sailing the Caribbean on her sailboat, The DreamMaker and diving the many coral reefs in that area. In addition, Betty enjoyed water-skiing, dancing, playing the piano, attending the theater whether drama, musical, ballet, symphony or opera, attending Sneed Family Reunions and spending time with her immediate family. A lifelong Methodist, Betty was baptized at St. Pauls United Methodist Church. Throughout her life, she was a member of Galena Park United Methodist Church, Parkcrest United Methodist Church, Glenbrook United Methodist Church and finally back at St. Pauls United Methodist in her later years. Betty was preceded in death by her sisters, Lillian Grace Sneed Jackson and Barbara Ann Sneed Merritt; and her brother, Robert Cravens Sneed. She is survived by her son, David Curtis Hunt, his wife, Lisa Jasek Hunt and step-grandson, David Glenn Mueller, his wife, Sarah; step-great-grandson, Carson and step-great-granddaughter Abigail, and by her son, Stephen Allen Hunt, his wife, Beverly Glasscock Hunt and grandson, Taylor Allen Hunt; and by her daughter ,Martha Elizabeth Hunt Hirsch, her husband, Duane Hirsch, step-granddaughter, Suzanne Hirsch Choiniere, her husband, Thomas, and step-great-grandson, Luke as well as a number of nephews, a niece and their families. Friends are cordially invited to greet the family during a visitation in the Grand Foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston from five oclock in the afternoon until seven oclock in the evening on Tuesday the 13th of January. The funeral is to be conducted at nine oclock in the morning on Wednesday the 14th of January at St. Pauls United Methodist Church, 5501 Main Street, Houston, Texas 77004. The interment will be held at three oclock Wednesday afternoon at Oakwood Cemetery, 2124 South 5th Street in Waco.
