The 1 – 0 win saw Eastwood become the first team to beat Port Glasgow in the league this season. Port Glasgow dominated possession in the early exchanges but they failed to unduly trouble an Eastwood defence superbly organized by Joe Sweeney and Kieran O’Donnell. Eastwood came more into the game and looked particularly threatening down the right hand side.Eastwood’s best effort in the first half came after 15 minutes. Port Glasgow failed to clear a cross from Jamie Dolan and when Jack Agnew managed to get the ball back into the box William Sewell almost got on the end of it.Port Glasgow almost took the lead 5 minutes before half-time. Ryan Truesdale did well to block the intial shot and Steven Allan was on hand to clear the follow up shot off the line.( HT 0 – 0 ) The second half followed a similar pattern with both teams struggling to create clear cut chances. An excellent Eastwood move on 60 minutes put substitute Tommy Duffy through on goal but he was adjudged to be offside. Another neat move 5 minutes later set up substitute Jake McPhillips but his first time effort was well saved by the visiting keeper. The break through came on 71 minutes from the penalty spot . Some clever interplay between Josh Jess and Matt Murphy set up William Sewell who was pulled down as he tried to turn in the box. Tommy Duffy took the responsibility for the penalty and fired an unstoppable shot high into the net.Despite some late Port Glasgow pressure Eastwood held on comfortably for a terrific victory. ( FT 1 – 0 ) Coaches CommentsGood Start to New Year ! The game was played in relatively good spirit, helped by a strong ref who dealt with everything well , both on and off the ball . A few team changes and change of formation after many phone calls and texts between the Coaches on Friday Evening, with both coming to the same conclusion on how Eastwood approached the game. At half time the guys were told we were happy with the, passing, work rate and pressure but lack of shots on goal was a worry ! Our defence had to weather the storm a little at times but did so excellently . Big Ryan pulled off some great stops,by being quick off his goal . A change of formation was called for after the Port re shaped their defence. And no sooner had it happened and a lovely 3 player move brought us a penalty as our fitness started to show as he game went on, slotted away brilliantly by Tommy,we resorted back to our starting formation to finish the game safely . Tough call but MOTM. Kieran ODonnell gets it for me.
