Match Reports 23rd/24th May 2014 Warkworth Football Albany United hosted both of Warkworth’s Senior Men’s teams on Saturday. With both of Warkworth sides situated towards the bottom of the table, wins were crucial to stay in touch with the teams around them. The Mitre 10 Mega Reserves were hoping to build on last week’s fine performance and secure a second straight win. The boys looked very solid early and it took a great Albany strike from a quick counterattack to break the first half deadlock. When Albany scored a second on the other side of halftime it looked like the pacey direct approach of the home side would win out over the more patient and structured approach of our boys. However, a Stuart Bickell header with only ten minutes left gave Warkworth a lifeline and it looked as though the boys might be able to steal a result. However, as the Warkworth team bombed forward they left themselves vulnerable at the back and a third Albany goal ended the contest. Albany scored another two late goals to run out 5-1 winners. In what was a good team performance that wasn’t reflected in the scoreline Clyde Johnson was named Player of the Day. The Ray White Real Estate First team took the field with Coach Paul Gothard donning the gloves for the first time in over four years as cover for injured keeper Simon Borich. Our boys were quick out of the box and created a number of first half chances. However, in what has been an all too familiar occurrence this season none of these chances were converted. Mike O’Flaherty, Harri Millar, Cam Grey and Brendan Deacon all had good chances to score but failed to convert. Then, in what really was a cruel blow for Warkworth, Albany scored from their first shot on target in the 40th minute. The second half continued in the same mould as the first with Warkworth missing a great chance to equalise only moments after the restart. However, Warkworth was on equal terms moments later when Ramon Tribulietx ran onto a Dan Notley through ball and calmly slotted home. Unfortunately, Tribulietx hurt himself in scoring but bravely played on. With Warkworth on top it seemed only a matter of time before they would take the lead. However, to Albany’s credit they didn’t fold and the match opened up, late in the half, with both teams looking for the winner. It was Albany that secured the victory however when they made Warkworth pay for turning the ball over cheaply. It was a cruel blow for the visitors who were left to rue missed opportunities knowing they created more than enough chances to win the game easily. Midfielder Cam Gray was named Player of the Day in what was Ramon Tribulitex’s last game for the club.....this season at least. Ramon is heading back to Barcelona with the end of his current contract at Auckland City. Warkworth AFC would like to thank Ramon for his efforts and we hope to see him in our colours again soon. Next week both of our Senior Men’s teams play at home, along with the clubs very senior- table topping Over 35s. The Reserves kick off at 12.30 and the First team are playing North Force at 2.45 with the Over 35s playing on the adjacent field. Come along, cheer on the lads and reminisce as Goffy is once again between the sticks in what should be a great day for our club. In a table top clash the Metroscaff Warkworth over 35’s hosted North Shore. A tense and even first 25 minutes saw the teams remain deadlocked until Kyle Deans opened the scoring for the home team with a lobbed cross/shot from an acute angle. The score remained at 1-0 only after an excellent stop by the Warkworth keeper Dave Hampson when North Shore broke an attempted offside trap from the Warkworth defence. The score remained at 1-0 until early in the second half when first Deans, and then Steve Gove scored again for the Warkworth side in quick succession. At 3-0 down North Shore suffered an injury to one of their players and they had no replacement so were forced to play with only 10 players. However this only inspired them and a combination of excellent skill from the North Shore strikers, and poor marking and tackling from the Warkworth midfield and defence enabled North Shore to get the scoreline back to 3-3 with 15 minutes still to play. Gove was then brought down in the North Shore penalty area by a very agricultural challenge and Will Kelly stepped up to put Warkworth back in front from the penalty spot. 4-3 was the final scoreline which takes Warkworth back to the top of the table. The Warkworth Withers and Co 17th grade team were away at Greenhithe and won 2-1. Player of the day was Tauaa. Goals were scored by Andrew Brockelsby and Leo Arnerich. After a very heavy loss to Glenfield last week the Warkworth Surveyors ladies side travelled to Hibiscus Coast to play the Coasts second team playing in the ladies second division. In a much improved performance the Warkworth side eventually lost 1-0 but will now be viewing the rest of the season with far greater optimism than they were at this time last week.
