Matthew 22:34-40 But when the Pharisees heard that he (Jesus) had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. 35 One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” 37 Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” Some of the religious leaders in particular tried to trap Jesus into saying something wrong. They did not believe Jesus was God and they were also jealous of all of the attention that Jesus received. In answering this question, we all learn what the most important commandment is - To love the Lord your God with al your heart, soul and mind. Why is this commandment so important? That can be answered by another scripture. John 14:21 Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.” If we truly love the Lord with everything that we have, we want to obey Him. When we obey God, God is glorified in our lives and glorified in the earth. The second greatest commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself. If we loved our neighbors as we love ourselves, this whole world would be different. For example: who wants things stolen from them? Since we would not want anything stolen from us, we would not steal from anybody else. There are so many ways that this scripture can be applied to show how this world would be different if we followed Gods principles.
