Matías Pulópulos (second from left; University of Valencia) was awarded an IBRO InEurope Short Stay Grant to attend the Brain Mind Institute, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Laboratory of Behavioral Genetics. He is investigating the effects of acute stress and long-term changes in Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis activity on cognitive performance in older individuals for his PhD. Under the direction of Professor Carmen Sandi, Matías developed his skills with various stress paradigms in rodents. In particular, he gained experience with a peri-pubertal stress model in mice, where animals were subjected to a series of stressors throughout several tests (tail suspension, elevated platform, predator odor, forced swim and restraint). In addition, Matías was able to familiarize himself with the assessment of social dominance and operant conditioning using the event logging software, Observer. Another successful training stay made possible by IBRO!
