May, 15th 2014 RE: Atwater Village Oil Spill, AVNC Co-Chair’s response to Media As a board of community members from Atwater Village, the Atwater Village Neighborhood Council is deeply concerned about the oil spill that took place early this morning. It is our understanding that the spill was downgraded to 10,000 gallons of crude oil, after initial estimates of a much greater amount. It is also our understanding that the relevant government agencies have responded, and are working quickly to ensure that the spill is contained and that the environmental impact has been mitigated. However, this incident begs important questions from the community. Why are there crude oil pipelines in Atwater Village? What caused this rupture? What is the long-term impact for the community members of Atwater Village? What is the risk of another rupture? It is our expectation that there will be a dialogue with the government agencies and businesses that are directly involved with this situation to help us find answers to these questions. Sincerely, Courtney Morris and Torin Dunnavant Co-Chairs, Atwater Village Neighborhood Council
