May he rip ... Marrickville Councillor Emanuel Tsardoulias, 1975–2014 Clr Emanuel TsardouliasMarrickville Councillor Emanuel Tsardoulias has died after a long battle with cancer. “It is with great sadness that Council learnt of the death of Councillor Tsardoulias,” said General Manager of Marrickville Council Brian Barrett. “Councillor Tsardoulias had a long struggle with cancer which he has fought with great courage and humour. He was one of our longest serving Councillors, and was an energetic and active advocate for the community. Council extends condolences to his family and friends.” “Emanuel was a close friend and colleague who I will miss everyday on Council. He always brought boundless energy and a youthful exuberance to everything he did, and shared his everlasting optimism with everyone he met,” said Mayor Jo Haylen. “He was truly dedicated to his local community and was always supporting projects that delivered real benefits to his residents and brought them together. Some of his pet projects included the recent extensive refurbishment of Jack Shanahan skate park and Arlington Oval, and Movies in Johnston Park. He has been taken from us way too soon and will be sadly missed,” Mayor Haylen said. Emanuel Tsardoulias was elected a Labor Councillor for the West Ward in September 2008. He was born and raised in the Marrickville local government area, attending Dulwich Hill Primary School, and Dulwich Hill High School, where he was taught by colleague Councillor Chris Woods. He embarked on a career in retail before switching to human resource management and economic development in local government. Councillor Tsardoulias was Chairperson of Council’s Infrastructure, Planning and Environmental Services Committee, and a member of many of Council’s Special Committees including the Newtown Art Seat Curatorial Committee, Artists in Residency Advisory Committee, Clubgrants Committee, Marrickville Parent Consultative Committee, Affordable Housing Committee, and Major Projects Steering Committee. He served as Deputy Mayor of Marrickville Council, 2012–13. He was a Metropolitan/Urban Director to the Local Government NSW Board, a delegate to Southern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (SSROC), and a member of the board of Metro Pool. He was a community member of Marrickville PCYC, Marrickville Chamber of Commerce, Dulwich Hill Urban Centre committee, and Vice Chair of Youth and Community Services of Rotary. A condolence motion will be passed at tomorrow night’s Council meeting. Councillor Tsardoulias’s family, friends, and colleagues are invited to attend and sign a condolence book. Councillor Tsardoulias is survived by wife Zoi and twin toddler boys Stephen and Dimitri. The funeral will be held at Greek Orthodox Parish of Saint Nicholas, 203 – 207 Livingstone Road Marrickville on Friday 22 August at 10.30am.
