May upset Mian Altafs bogey this time around Seesaw battle at Kangan between NC, PDP Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report KANGAN, Nov 30: This assembly seat in Central Kashmirs Ganderbal district may come up with a surprising result on December 23 when the counting of votes would be taken up along with the other 86 assembly seats of the state. National Conferences senior leader and the incumbent Environment and Forests Minister, Mian Altaf Ahmad is locked in an intense battle with Bashir Ahmad Mir of People’s Democratics Party. There is a clear division of votes in this constituency and one can say that a sort of polarization has taken place in voting that took place on November 25. Voters of this constituency are divided into two categories Gujjars and non-Gujjars. While the Gujjars have generally been hailing Mian Altaf for the development in the constituency the non-Gujjars allege that no step for their development has been taken so far. Altaf is seeking re-election from this constituency and is seemingly fighting the hardest election of his political career. Mian Altaf holds influence among the Gujjar voters and they vote for him every time when voting takes place. He does not pay any heed to the suggestions and proposals of non-Gujjar voters and in such a situation it was not feasible to vote for him during the elections that were conducted recently, said Fayaz Ahmad, a resident of Manigam. Like Fayaz there are many people in the constituency who say that they would like PDP to form next Government in the state. They have their own point of view in this regard and say that PDP alone can take the state out of mess. When Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was the Chief Minister of the State we lived as dignified and respectable citizens. There was no undue harassment of the civilians. Police, Army and paramilitary forces were made accountable. Tourism and other activities can get a flourish only when there is a sense of security and same is missing these days, said Abdul Hamid, a resident of Preng. This constituency has always remained a safe haven for National Conference with Mian Altaf getting elected many times in the past. However, like the other assembly segments of Kashmir this assembly segment too was pocketed by PDP in the parliamentary elections held in May this year. The Gujjar voters of this Assembly seat praise the present legislator for his work and say that Kangan has tremendous development over the past decade or so. These people are quite confident that Altaf would pull through this time too with PDP candidate finishing second. There are macadamized roads and other forms of development in Kangan and all this has been possible due to Mian Altaf. Given his developmental agenda he would once again make it to the Assembly thus bringing more relief to the people. PDP supporters are building castles in the air without realizing the ground situation, said Qasim Khatana, a resident of Wangath. The PDP supporters and workers are banking upon the image of PDP Patron and they point out that a leaders image holds key to the overall chances of a particular political party. They say that Mufti has a clean image and this is all bound to upset the bogey of Mian Altaf Ahmad this time around in this Assembly segment.
