Maybe I wouldn’t think so poorly of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes if not for over-the-top critics who’ve called it “intelligent” and “poignant.” I wonder if critics see so many bad movies that serviceable ones start to seem great to them, or if they’re protecting their access to extravagant screenings by liking everything big budget. Dawn of POA is not intelligent or poignant; it’s typical Hollywood “blockbuster” garbage with all energies focused on effects and promotion. The story is full of nonsense (apes in war paint herding deer) and contrivances (let’s bring the idiot who started this mess on the reconciliation mission), and repetition (try to keep count of the “take me to your leader” scenes). It’s just what’s needed to make something happen, but not enough happens to ensure that there’ll be a few more installments. It “ends” (the film stops rolling) with little change from where it began. The characters are stereotypical; war mongering, intolerant bad guys, sympathetic but brave good guys, nurturing women, angsty artsy teens, along with herds of sheep-like people and apes cowering under the wrath of the bad guys or fawning under the protection of the good ones. Of the latter, it’d be amusing to watch the director in action; “okay you sheeple, be happy now and dance about—act like you don’t know hell is coming.” The dialog is cliché (“We don’t want to cause a panic.”, “Will he make it?”…”We’ll see; he’s strong”). Save your money.
