Maybe we could make this the false friends list. For a long time, my idea of an atrium (in English) was a large glass-ceilinged space inside a building. While talking with a client a few months ago, I learned that the Czech word atrium can be used to mean inner courtyard, which is actually the original Latin meaning. (Outside of classical architecture, I dont think it is used like that in English. See, e.g., this atriový dům, which I am translating today and which can only be courtyard.) English speakers, do you agree or am I vedle? Got any other favorite false friends?
