Mayors announce vote on Utopia Brigham City Mayor Tyler Vincent, Tremonton Mayor Roger Fridal and Perry Mayor Karen Cronin, along with the remaining three other Wasatch Front mayors who are part of the troubled UTOPIA fiber optic project, announced at a press conference in West Valley City today that the decision of whether or not to move forward with the Macquarie Capital proposal would be put to a public vote on the November ballot. Individual city councils would need to approve the referendum, but all of the mayors indicated they had sufficient support to see it placed on the ballot. The proposed deal would have Macquarie finish construction of the fiber optic network in exchange for guaranteed subscribers in those cities. Current estimates place a user fee of $20 per household, which would provide basic internet access at speeds of 3 Mbps up and down.
