McAllen Tea Party Association Opening Statement January 22, 2015 Welcome to the McAllen/Hidalgo County Tea Party meeting. How many are here for the first time? We have gift of a pocket Constitution for you. Use it when someone makes a ridiculous statement about our founding. Carry it with you proudly. Last Friday Beth and I went to a movie. We don’t do that very often. Popcorn is too expensive. But this movie was based on a book that we both had read-The American Sniper by Chris Kyle. Seldom does the American citizen that has not served in combat have an opportunity to see the dichotomy of a combat veteran’s life. We miss out families when we are away. But we still draw an intense amount of pride for engaging in activities that some of us had trained years to do. If you haven’t seen the movie, please make an effort to do so. It is a keeper and its first week of sales is an indicator of what Americans think about the movie. Michael Moore should spend about 5 minutes covering his head from a mortar attack or evading a surface to air missile and pulling 5 Gs’ to do it. His lunch would be in a bag. And Leeson, I feel that same way about you as I do Hanoi Jane. You will not get a single dollar from me watching any of your movies. France is a gun free zone. Gun free zone actually cultivates assassinations. Free speech is one of the backbones of any free society. Attempts to control need to be blocked, even if the speech is disliked by some people. Christians do not kill people because a crucifix is dropped in a jar of urine, or covered with dog poop. Beth and I attended our first Inauguration on Tuesday. Lt Governor Patrick and Governor Abbott were sworn in on the south Capitol Steps. If you have not attended an inauguration, put it on your bucket list. It was very fulfilling for all of the time that we spent planning “Meet and Greets,” helping with block walks, and making phone calls. Most of the state wide winners made at least one stop in the valley and your Tea Party participated in those visits. We will continue that. A particular highlight for me was 4 F-16’s making a low pass over the capitol building. It is one last symbol of the fading greatness of the United States. Tuesday night we arrived home in time to watch the SOTU speech by the President. I shared something that night with Rush Limbaugh. Like Rush I knew the self-aggrandizing event it would be. On Talk Radio all the way home we listened to the reports that the President had telegraphed everything over the days previous to the speech. I read the newspapers the following morning. I didn’t miss anything. He won both elections. Are we sure of that? Four million conservatives stayed home in 2012. The media is driving 20 million to stay home in 2016. Bush 45 doesn’t impress me, Romney 3 doesn’t impress me. Rand Paul is a flip flop. Cruz, Walker and Jindal, in that order, impress me. The rest of them tried to cut the throat of the Tea Party and other conservatives. We are elephants with long memories. Tea Party Presidents in North Texas are already recruiting to replace Republicans that violated their campaign promises in Washington and Austin. We just need to replace Democrats down here. Recruiting is being discussed and possible candidates are being vetted. How many were Deputy Voter Registrars? Our certificate expired 12-31-2014. We need to register every person that we can. I have a list of dates and some registration forms. Some of your fellow members have joined a bipartisan group to work against the next attempt to get the Hospital District passed. It will probably be on the ballot again in November 2015. They can and probably will try every year until it passes. The group is also looking at McAllen ISD’s 440 million bond issue on the May ballot. This group has already filed PAC paperwork, so that it can accept donations and spend it on materials to distribute, newspapers ads, signs, and radio time. Several members of the Tea Party have also begun attending meetings with Americans for Prosperity. So far the focus group in the valley includes members of two tea parties, OWLS and Republican Women. AFP has methods to change the dynamic of voting. The emphasis is on issues, not on candidates. But the techniques could probably be used either way. Training will be provided probably in March. Anyone wanting to join this group please contact me. We have to make a difference by 2016. Let’s plan for it, get trained and do what we have to do to fix it. No one is going to do it for us.
