Meadowbrook fight back for first league win of the season. Meadowbrook travelled to Newton 66 with a few players missing but still with a strong squad, and started brightly against a very youthful 66 side. Brook shouldve have been in front after dominating the early proceedings and couldve been out of sight after 20 minutes. However, they fell behind after some sloppy defending. Newton, with their first real attack, broke into the box and Brook failed to clear their lines properly and allowed a cross to come in and the 66 player to head home easily. A sloppy start. Brook continued to dominate and create chance after chance - even managing to miss on the goal line! They finally levelled when Lee Smiths shot was deflected in off the defender to deceive the goalkeeper. However, instantly from the kick off, Brook fell behind again. Route one football at its finest - Newton kicked the ball over the top for the pacey striker, who crossed for an easy tap-in. Brook went in behind - somehow - at the break despite dominating. Newton had two attack. Brooks sloppy defending continued after the break, and fell further behind early on when a player was left free to head home following a corner. 3-1 and Brook up against it. The Gaffer, Phil Collings, then made an inspired tactical change. With Ben Reynolds returning from injury to play for the first time this season, Brook changed to a 3-5-2 formation. This was instantly effective and Brook got a goal back when Dave Topham scored from close range. Topham also got Brooks equaliser when Adam Bakers long pass was flicked on by James Howrihane, playing in a new role, and Topham duly finished. 3-3 but Brook werent satisfied. They continued to create many chances and had a shot cleared off the line. Then, Dave Tophams fine through ball found Smith, whose shot was saved by the keeper, but rebounded off the defender and into the net. Brook in front for the first time in the game and good value for it. Brook were then put under pressure briefly but scored their fifth goal at the very of the game. Anthony Goss was on the end of a horrific challenge with Ross Davis taking the resulting free kick. His long ball was met by the diving header of Howrihane for his second goal in as many games. Brook got the win they deserved, but made hard work of it. A much needed moral boost with Kinsteignton in the Herald Cup next week.
