Measuring the Barley Aishah (radi Allahu anha) said: “The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) died and we had a Shatr of barley. We ate from it as Allah willed, then I said to the slave girl, ‘Measure it’ so she measured it, and it was not long before it was gone.” She said: “If we had left it alone then we could have eaten from it more than that.” [Jami at-Tirmidhi] Shatr means a small quantity of barley. The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) left nothing in inheritance, except for some food grains in the chambers of his wives. Aishah (radi Allahu anha) tells us that the blessing was less after having concern for the measurement left behind. Had they relied on Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) and not been concerned with measuring how much they had left, it would have lasted them longer. This narration indicates to us the importance of not devoting ourselves to worldly matters. Rather than constantly checking our bank balances and assets we should devote ourselves to the cause for which Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) sent us to earth. We should place our reliance on Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) regarding that which He has promised us – our Rizq, and worry about that which He told us to earn with our effort – eternal abodes in Jannah and safety from Shaitaan’s destination which is the Fire.
