“Medical College at Anantnag Will Alleviate Sufferings of People of South Kashmir” Congress-led Government Focussed on All Round development: Azad NDA Govt has Miserably Failed to Fulfil its Promises: Ambika SRINAGAR NOV 29; Asserting that Congress Party has played a historic role in steering the country to its present status as an ‘emerging power’, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha & Former Chief Minsiter of J&K, Ghulam Nabi Azad said that it is the Congress Party which has represented the masses ever since its birth in 1885. He said, Congress Party has led the country both in the pre-independence & post-independence phase successfully and effectively with focus on strengthening of democracy, institution-building, scientific & technological advancement, infrastructure building, educational progress and social and economic empowerment, and all the initiatives of successive Governments have steered the country to new heights in all the spheres of life. Ghulam Nabi Azad was speaking at a number of public meetings in Chenani, Reasi, Gool-Arnas, Gulabgarh & Devsar Constituencies which are slated to go for polls in the second phase. Mrs Ambika Soni, General Secretary AICC also addressed the gatherings while Jugal Kishore Sharma, MLC & contesting Candidate, Ajaz Ahmad Khan, MOS & Contesting Candidate Gool-Arnas, Mumtaz Ahmad Khan, Contesting Candidate Gulabgarh-Mahore, Mohammad Amin Bhat, Ex MLC & Contesting Candidate and other prominent leaders were present. Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s emphasis on rural areas, Azad said that Congress Party launched numerous popular and successful initiatives like 73rd Amendment, MGNREGA, Indira Awas Yojana, Sarv Siksha Abhiyaan, National Rural Health Misssion, Mid-Day Meal, etc to ameliorate the lot of rural India. Azad said that similarly Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru’s commitment to scientific temper and technological progress enabled the creation of scientific institutions, industries, universities, dams, etc thus laying foundation for a strong and modern India which is aspiring to be on the threshold of becoming a world power. “Mrs Indira Gandhi’s stellar contributions to nation building in the shape of green revolution led to the accomplishment of food security and freedom from hunger and starvation in the country”, said Azad. Recalling the outstanding achievements of Rajiv Gandhi, Azad said that his slogan of ‘twenty first century’ gave a new concept to transform India into a modern and advanced country, with unparalleled expertise in cutting edge technologies like computers, electronics, space technology, automobiles, etc. In continuation of this rich legacy and glorious past, UPA Government in the past ten years scripted new chapter in the field of infrastructure building by creating new highways, roads, modern airports, Central Universities, New IIMs, New AIIMS, Hospitals, Colleges, Schools, Ports, power projects, new railway lines, space-crafts, missiles, tanks, submarines, aircraft carriers, etc. “Ten years of UPA Government created state-of-art infrastructure on an unprecedented scale across the length & breadth of the country, in addition to landmark initiatives like RTI, MGNREGA, Food Security Act”, said Azad. Seeking a decisive mandate, Azad said that Congress Party will revive an era of progress and progress in the State also by ensuring justice to all the regions and sub-regions of the State, with special focus on remote and hilly areas like Reasi, Gool, Gulabgarh, Mahore, Bani, Chenani, Billawar, etc. He said that Congress-led Government in a limited span of two and a half years Congress Party gave a new paradigm of growth and development to the State with thrust on inclusiveness and efficiency. “Our two and a half years outcompete all political parties who have ruled the State of Jammu & Kashmir in the past few decades and the people of the State have decided to give a decisive mandate to Congress Party to script a new chapter of hope, prosperity and optimism in the State”, said Azad. Raising a strong pitch in support of the candidates of Congress Party, Azad said that Congress-led Government demonstrated to the people of the State how forces of development and progress can be unleashed with vigour and passion in a short span of time, despite of the non-cooperative attitude of the coalition partner, as also the machinations of the anti-development elements, hell bent to perpetuate darkness and backwardness in the State. Azad asked, “I ask the people is there any political party which has better report card than us on the front of development and good governance?”, said Azad. “Congress Party has provided an efficient, people-friendly and development-oriented regime in a short span of two and a half years, which the aspirational and progressive people, especially youth of the State are deeply yearning to revive”, asserted Azad. Assuring the people of a credible and effective government having the will and ability to deliver on the promise of progress and development, Azad said that while embarking on a path of fast track growth, we will also ensure justice and fair treatment to all regions, remote and hilly areas of the State. Reminding the people of the achievements of Congress-led Government, Azad said that roads, hospitals, colleges, schools, power projects, tourism development authority and other basic infrastructure was constructed in the entire State with emphasis on time-bound execution. Azad said that as Union Health Minister, he sanctioned Medical College for Anantnag thus fulfilling the long pending demand of the people of South Kashmir, adding that his decision to upgrade District Hospital Anantnag during his tenure as Chief Minister paved the way for converting it into Medical College. Assuring the people to complete the construction of Medical College on priority, Azad urged the people to give a decisive mandate to Congress Party from South Kashmir, adding that Mrs Indira Gandhi had very strong connections with this land of intellectuals and literary personalities which has always been favourably disposed towards Congress Party. Flagging reconstruction of the flood-ravaged State as a priority, Azad said that keeping in view the destruction and damage that has occurred in all parts of the State, especially South Kashmir and Srinagar, it is absolutely necessary to have a credible, effective and sensitive Government in the State at this juncture. He said, “it is only the Congress-led Government which has the ability, will and skill to bring the State out of despondency and pessimism prevailing in the aftermath of floods to script a new chapter of progress, prosperity and growth”. Questioning the credentials of PDP in the light of its tall claims of fighting BJP, Azad said that how can people of the State accept their sermonizing rhetoric when its covert attempts to support BJP in the Chenab Valley region, both in the Parliament and Assembly elections, have become a hot buzz across the State. Azad said, “Are not the people of the state aware of the fact that PDP has been singing paens of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and BJP, inspite of the fact that we gave them the opportunity to head the coalition Government on 16 seats; cooperated with them to the utmost when PDP headed the coalition, and most importantly gave full support to them from the Centre which was ruled by UPA Government at that point of time”. He said that ‘opportunism’ is the appropriate tagline to describe PDP, as they never acknowledge the support of UPA Govt, Dr Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson, Smt Sonia Gandhi that they received so generously on all fronts while heading the coalition Government in the State. He further said, “People of the State understand quite well what they keep harping on is something is politically motivated and far away from reality”. “What else can be the biggest proof of PDPs opportunism than this?” asked Azad Taking a dig at PDP, Azad said that our biggest fault was to ask PDP to transfer power after three years in accordance with the agreement reached between the two political parties, and that itch still seems to be troubling them, and often, impels them to spread misinformation. He further said that Congress party has adhered to its agreements and commitments while dealing with alliance partners, be it National Conference or PDP, however, how the alliance partners have reciprocated and behaved , is a fact known to the people of the State. Castigating the political parties who are forming Governments and distributing portfolios in their own make-believe world, Azad said that they are insulting the people of the State who are yet to deliver their mandate. “Some parties are proclaiming to have 44+, others are distributing portfolios, and we are going to the people with our agenda of development, equity and justice. People cannot be taken for granted as it is the people who are the real fountainhead of power, and not the self-proclaiming parties”, said Azad. Mrs Ambika Soni, General Secretary AICC while speaking on the occasion launched a frontal attack on the BJP, saying that it has miserably failed to fulfil the promises it made to the people of the country during the Lok Sabha elections, and as such, has gradually started backing out on those promises. Ambika Soni asked, “Has the BJP fulfilled its promise of bringing back all the black money within 100 days”? She said that people of the country are eagerly waiting to receive the promised Rs 15.00 Lacs per household which the BJP Government will distribute after bringing back the black money. Ambika said that Congress Party has the ability to accommodate all the sections of the society and its contributions in the empowerment of weaker and marginalised classes like women, youth, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, etc has been outstanding. Cautioning the people about the hollow slogans of the BJP, Ambika soni said that after seven months of the NDA Government in the Centre there is hardly any change in the lives of common masses which clearly proves that the BJP is selling dreams and hollow slogans to the people without any visible impact on the ground. “Congress party works for the welfare of the people and country quietly and tirelessly, while BJP Government focusses on publicity and photo ops”, said Ambika.
