Medical Privacy in California Train-the-Trainer July 10, 2013 - Rialto, CA Dear Community Partner, You’re invited to the Medical Privacy in California training hosted by Consumer Action. The training will be held in Rialto on Wednesday, July 10, 2013. The Medical Privacy training is made possible by a grant from the Rose Foundation. The training will provide you with tools and materials to help you educate clients and community members on the transition from paper to electronic health records; the benefits and risks that come with digital patient files; the health information privacy rights that California consumers now have; and when health information that can be disclosed with and without the consent of the patient. We encourage you to register as early as possible since seating is limited. Registrations will be accepted until June 28. Register online at: regonline/hprt-rialto. The training will cover: Health records basics: the types of information that all health records contain, how patient information is compiled, and how paper and electronic health records compare; Health information privacy rights: federal and state health information privacy laws and how health information can and can’t be used or disclosed without the patient’s permission; Access to health records: who has access to patient health records and how to obtain and amend your own records; and Protecting privacy: limiting who can see or use the information in your health records, dealing with a data breach, avoiding medical identity theft, and what to do if your privacy rights have been violated. Consumer Action has designed the roundtable especially for you ― staff members of community-based organizations and social service groups, who will use the information for future one-on-one counseling, presentations and train-the-trainer meetings.
