Meet Cleo Hearn of Lancaster, known as Mr. Black Rodeo in cowboy - TopicsExpress

Meet Cleo Hearn of Lancaster, known as Mr. Black Rodeo in cowboy circles. Lancaster dedicated a more than 2-mile equestrian trail at Bear Creek Nature Park to the black rodeo pioneer on Feb. 28, and its no wonder: Hes been a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association since 1959 and he has been producing rodeos since 1968. His first black rodeo in Texas was in 1975 at Fair Park, and eventually that rodeo evolved into what is now Cowboys of Color. I was trying to find a way to develop more black cowboys, more Indian cowboys. That was the driving force. Back then, most of the time, youd go to a rodeo, and youd be the only black person there, he said. Born to a family of educators in Seminole, Okla., Hearn was 12 years old when he roped his first calf for a cash pot. Now hes 74, and hes still roping: d-news.co/uBPmL (Photo: Rose Baca/DMN).
