Meet Roman. :) He is a young husky who has been coming to training with us since being a puppy. He is exhibiting great impulse control within this video. This is great for any young dog to learn but in particular for Roman who had not long ago started to guard items and places from the other dogs at training. He would warn dogs who went near him while he had toys and had even started to squeal at other dogs when they had toys in their breaktime. We began shaping him to learn that other dogs having fun and being near his things was a good thing, by using a high rate of reinforcement when other dogs had items. Then as he got used to this moved dogs closer to him. Here he is leaving a Rawhide bone. Rawhides are incredibly high value to Roman, so he started off rather excited and made a few noises hoping it would get him the chew! However he quickly responded when he was clicked and treated for being calm. This took less than 1 minute. As you can see no cues are being given at all. Roman is learning that when he sees something and remains calm he gets more than trying to steal it! Kerry is using moevement as a reward as well as treats as he enjoys being with her, and you can see she clicks and treats multiple times while walking away from the rawhide. This is teaching Roman that leaving and walking away from something great is very rewarding! Much easier than trying to drag our dogs away from litter and food on the ground on walks! The young dogs in his class have been learning this for some time and Bella, an 8 month old pug, was also doing the same and not even moving when treats were thrown on the floor right by her! By not using cues they are beginning to learn to think for themselves when they see something they may want and remain calm. https://youtube/watch?v=c867FZyS-as
