Meet the #DCAT2014 Speakers: #DCAT2014FaithInTheMarketplace ERNEST NISHIZAKI Ernest K. Nishizaki brings over 43 years of visitor industry experience of which 32 years at executive level positions with Sheraton and Starwood Hotels and Resorts and 11 years in his current role as Executive Vice President of Kyo-ya Company, LLC. He joined Kyo-ya in 2002 and served as General Manager of the company for his first year. Mr. Nishizaki joined ITT Sheraton Corporation’s Management Trainee program in Waikiki in 1970, after graduation from the University of Hawai`i’s Travel Industry Management program. At the completion of his management training in 1972, he was appointed Resident Manager of the Sheraton West in Los Angeles. Subsequently, he has served in the same capacity at the Sheraton Houston and the Sheraton Palace Hotel in San Francisco. In 1977 he was appointed General Manager of Sheraton Waiakea Village Hotel in Hilo, Hawai`i. In 1980 he was promoted to Vice President and General Manager of the Sheraton Maui Hotel on Ka`anapali Beach, followed by assignments at Sheraton Makaha Resort and Country Club in leeward Oahu, Sheraton Coconut Beach on Kauai, Sheraton Kauai Beach Resort, and Sheraton Kauai Garden Hotel. In 1993 he became the first local born General Manager of The Royal Hawaiian. Born in Honolulu, Nishizaki graduated from the University of Hawai`i with a Business Administration degree in Travel Industry Management. The University of Hawai`i College of Business Administration Alumni Hall of Honor selected Mr. Nishizaki as the first recipient of the Travel Industry Management Outstanding Alumnus Award (1992-93). In 1998, he was honored with the University of Hawai`i Distinguished Alumni Award. In 2012, he was the recipient of the Public Schools of Hawai`i Kulia I Ka Nu`u Award and the UH Travel Industry Management Legacy in Tourism Award. Very active in community and tourism industry activities, he has served as the Chair of the Hawai`i Hotel & Lodging Association (State Chapter) for two terms, 2004-2005 and 1992-1993, and has served on the Association board for many years. In 2011 he was the recipient of the American Hotel and Lodging Association State Leadership Award for Hawai`i. He currently is a governing member of the Tax Foundation of Hawai`i. He also serves as Vice Chair and board member of Aloha United Way. In support of the University of Hawai`i he is a member of the University of Hawai`i TIM School Advisory Council and an executive committee and board member of Ahahui Koa Anuenue. He also serves as an executive committee member and director of the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl as well as President of the Hawai`i Bowl Foundation. He is a member of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic executive committee. Clearly committed to the sustainable of our island environment and our natural resources, he currently serves as a member of the Hawai`i Clean Energy Initiative as well as an advisor to the Sea Grant Program.
