Meet the newly elected APA Secretary, Judy Shaw! My involvement in the APA spans over 22 years, and my past board experience and my strong working relationships with the PAS organizations and staff have prepared me well for this role. For the past 10 years I have had the honor to serve as the APA liaison to the American Academy of Pediatrics Bright Futures Education Center, where I was appointed to serve as the co-chair and co-editor for the October release of Bright Futures: Guidelines for Health Supervision, 3rd Edition. I have also served on the Board of Directors as Workshops/SIGS Chair, Communications Director, as Region I co-chair, on the Nominating Committee, on the Editorial Board of Ambulatory Pediatrics, as APA appointee to DHHS Secretary’s Primary Care Health Policy Fellowship, and as Educational Scholars Program faculty mentor. Along the way after obtaining my nursing degree in Boston, I received a bachelor’s degree from Yale University, an MPH from Boston University, and a doctoral degree from the University of Vermont (UVM). I hold the position of Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the UVM College of Medicine and Executive Director of the Vermont Child Health Improvement Program and the National Improvement Partnership Network. During my time on the APA Board, and most recently as the Workshop/SIGS Chair, I developed and nurtured a strong relationship with the PAS organizations and especially the PAS staff. It is this foundation of strong working relationships and mutual respect that I will bring to the Secretary position. The Secretary represents the APA at other organizations, such as FOPO and it would be an honor for me to represent the APA and bring my experience, solid negotiation skills and enthusiasm to these partner organizations. My passion and expertise is in improving the quality of children’s health care. Recognizing we all share the desire to improve the health of children, families and communities, during my term I will work with you to build more effective methods for collaboration among the variety of disciplines represented by the members. I will build upon the APA’s Strategic Plan to further the association’s pursuit of innovation and energy in its pursuit of excellence. Our children deserve the very best and a vibrant APA will unite its diverse members in their quest to provide the education, research, patient care and advocacy needed to support healthy children, families and communities. As APA Secretary, I will work with you toward this goal.
