Member States of the Commonwealth have appointed - TopicsExpress

Member States of the Commonwealth have appointed Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), under the chairmanship of Isaac Hassan, to chair its Electoral Network Secretariat in the world for the next two years. This follows IEBC’s efforts to deliver free, fair and transparent elections in Kenya since its inception. IEBC scored highly in the eyes of Commonwealth Member States in terms of credibility and transparency, and its conduct during the 2013 General Election, where it declared Uhuru Kenyatta as President against Raila Odinga, was just icing on the cake. This comes amid former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s call for the disbandment of the IEBC for rigging him out and favouring Uhuru/ Ruto in the last election. The opposition even threatened to boycott the 2017 elections if IEBC in its current form will oversee the election, saying the electoral body cannot be trusted to referee another election. The Commonwealth move is a big blow to Raila Odinga and perhaps the last nail on his coffin as far as disbanding the IEBC is concerned, because the whole world now has confidence in the Hassan-led electoral commission. Commonwealth has 53 member countries that span from Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific.
