Memo on Cinema: Two Women (Do Zan, 1999) -- By Payman Akhlaghi (Draft 1) -- I watched Two Women (دو زن), Ms. T Milanis 1999 film (Persian, with English subtitles), on the screen in its American release. As I revisited some clips on YT, I was struck how courageous and relevant it has remained, as many societies today, if the news are taken literally, continue to suffer from the consequences of institutionalized patriarchy and male chauvinism, one way or another, sometimes in anachronistically fatal forms. Then and now, I hold three male characters in almost equal contempt: the obvious villain, i.e. the jealous and dangerous stalker; as well as the father and the husband of the female protagonist, who absurdly and irrationally -- but not uncommonly -- misplace the blame on this young woman with baseless yet culturally sanctified self-righteous indignation. I share with you the trailer of the film. youtube/watch?v=GduO765qC4c © 2014, Payman Akhlaghi. All rights reserved.
