Memoirs of a Mother #18 First sign of Hope A few days after being in ICU we were visit by the head Dr. from Touro which was where we would be expected to go for rehab after leaving University. They came in early on the scene to follow Katie so they would be better prepared for her upon her arrival. This Dr. was the first to give us some hope. They did their testing of nerve responses and concluded that the spinal cord could not severed because there were slight responses and they would know more have the spinal surgery. This was very encouraging. I watched closely for this man every day and always wanted to be sure to get his opinion of how things were going. There were always so many Drs. coming in and out. It became hard to keep up with them. There was the Dr. from Touro and his students and the psychiatrist and their students. The hospital had two teams. I called them the green team and blue team. The green was the general medical Drs and they took care of the debriding surgeries. The blue team was the neurology team and they were over the spinal cord injury. We saw all of them every day all hours of the day. It was never the same. After she was stronger and after several debriding surgeries, because the burns were first priority, it was time for the back surgery. Now I can’t speak for a Dad but most Moms know and can sense when something has happened with their child and I had. I had also questioned it for quite some time. The day before surgery a group of doctors came in to examine and make final plans on the surgery. It was then that I discovered a shocking reality. I was sitting by Katie’s bed when six Drs. came in for their final examine before the back surgery. I just rolled back in my chair away from the bed so they could do what they had to do and I would not be in the way. Two were on the left side and four took their place on the right side. They line up down her body and the four of them did what they called a log roll to keep her in total alignment. The other two began to discuss just how they would perform the surgery right down to the opening incision. I was listening to all I could hear and watched as they held her on her side. The more I looked I noticed that they had writing on her and I found that very interesting LOL so I rolled up a little to take a closer look. I still couldn’t quite figure it out but definitely could tell it was writing so I rolled a little closer. Now you just have to imagine this, there are a group of highly intelligent doctors surrounding my daughter and I’m in the background sneaking up and by this time leaning over as far as I can in my chair to read this mysterious marking. I thought surely once I figured it out I would have a better understanding and that it surely must mark their starting point. Well you can only imagine my surprise and horror when I finally got close enough to read a little three word phrase of “Let it be”. Right as I shot up straight in my chair, Troy walked in the door. I looked at him, pointed to her, and asked if he knew anything about the “Let it be”. Of course he did the same thing she had done for months and lied to me but then said he did know. Afterwards when the doctors had left and Katie and I were alone again, she woke up and asked me a question you can only imagine her shock when my answer was; “I don’t know but will just let that be too. HAHAHA. Although still not happy, her face was priceless.
