Memories of pain during childbirth tied to intensity rather than length of labor This is a very small study which suggests that memories of a womans memory of pain in childbirth is not based on the length of a womans labour. The study also suggests that women who have epidurals reported having lower levels of pain when reflecting on their overall experience. Potential limitations of the study are size (320 women) and the methods of collecting data in which a researcher was present during each womans labour and asked every 20 minutes for the woman to provide a scale for the pain she is experiencing. Thoughts: Asking a woman in labour to break at such short intervals (every 20 minutes) to focus directly on pain and to rate it will not enable the labouring woman to find her natural rhythm or relaxation/coping techniques. Requiring women to focus only on pain every 20 minutes has the potential to increase a womans anxieties. While most women experience challenging sensations in labour (women use lots of words for this, not necessarily pain - pressure, intensity, tightening) the mind is often a powerful tool that can work with the labouring woman or can add to distress. The suggestion of pain and to focus directly on that pain can influence how a woman copes or experiences labour sensations. The length of labour is an interesting aspect of the study - particularly if considered from an Active Management of Labour position in which it is considered a benefit (kinder) to prevent women from experiencing a longer labour and use interventions to speed the process despite risks introduced by this.
