Memphis, I love you. In the 5 years that I have been here, you have become the hometown I didnt realize I was looking for. I love your people and their successes and continued struggles. I love your local arts, local music, local art galleries and local coffee shops. I love your history and your geography. I love the fact that you are a little blue dot in a southern red state. I love your grit and your grind. I love your sunrises and sunsets and all of the hours in between. I love your river, your bridges, your trees, your grassy fields and your concrete buildings. I love that your citizens continue to fight to make this city a better place to live--for everyone. I love your diversity: in people; in food; in music; in art; in outlook. I love that I made new friends on the day I moved here and I made a new friend yesterday. Which makes it all the more difficult to say good-bye. This time next week Ill be driving 1000 miles to my next station. Im headed to Port St. Lucie, FL and the home of my parents. Ive been struggling with worsening systemic arthritis and fatigue for more than 15 years and now I need a respite. My parents offer a place to live while I recoup and regroup. I will be continuing my Focus for the Good photography work in FL as there are homeless people everywhere. I might not ever have started Focus for the Good if I hadnt move to Memphis and it has been one of the most fulfilling things Ive done in my life. Ill be an hour north of West Palm Beach and a mere 10 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean so please feel free to let me know if youre planning a trip to that area! Maybe I can offer you a place to stay or at least a fellow-Memphian with whom to share a meal. On the beach. Why do you think they call them sandwiches? Memphis, Ill miss you more than you could ever know. I hope to be back one day. Until then, grit and grind, baby!
