Menelik Watson surprised the family of four year old Ava Urrea when he walked up to Ava’s father and said he wanted Ava and the family to enjoy the holidays. The Oakland Raiders had flown Ava and her family to visit the team because Ava is a huge Raiders fan. The team gave the family signed helmets, footballs and team memorabilia as it pulled out all the stops to extend hospitality to the family. Ava has hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a congenital birth defect that essentially leaves her with half a heart and has endured continuous medical treatment. According to NFLPA records, Watson’s base salary for 2014 is $622,948. Players are paid based on the 17 games the team plays during the season. One-seventeenth of Watson’s gross salary would be $36,944. After federal and state taxes take their bite, the family will receive about $18,000 as a result of Watson’s generosity.
