Mental Health Monday Post Since 1998, the Road Safety Authority - TopicsExpress

Mental Health Monday Post Since 1998, the Road Safety Authority has reduced the number of fatalities on our roads by 60%* and according to statistics, Ireland is the 5th safest country in the EU for fatalities per million population. The latest figures available for 2012 show 162 people died on our roads. The RSA focused on education, enforcement and to some extent road improvements. Very impressive results that have no doubt saved a lot of lives. The RSA has an annual budget of around €42* The National Office for Suicide Prevention (NOSP) has an annual budget of €8.8 for 2014* Currently the HSE and charitable organisations do what they can with very limited budgets. I’d never heard of NOSP until I started researching today and I would consider myself well versed in mental health, after months of posting every Monday about it. The most up to date statistics from the Central Statistic office from 2010 show deaths by suicides at 486. This does not account for deaths that were unconfirmed as suicides, so personally I believe that figure to be higher in reality. Is it time to tackle suicide properly, like was done with road deaths? Suicide rates are 3 times that of road deaths but the budget for the National Office for Suicide Prevention is almost a fifth smaller than the Road Safety Authority’s. Money will not solve everything for sure, but it would be a great start.
