Merkel heads to the Greens in pursuit of a new government . . . . . . . . . German Chancellor Angela Merkel intensified her efforts to forge a new government Thursday as she leads exploratory talks with the Green Party to form what would be an historic German coalition. Merkel emerged from last month`s general election as the winner with her conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian-based associate party, the Christian Social Union (CSU) remaining the biggest political bloc in parliament. However, the Chancellor needs a new coalition partner after her ally for the last campaign, the Free Democrats, failed to win any parliamentary seats from the elections, and her CDU/CSU bloc falling short of securing an absolute majority by a handful of seats. A coalition with the Greens, which gained 8.4 percent of the September general election, would be the first time the conservatives and the Greens share power in Germany at the national level. "We take every set of talks seriously," Merkel said ahead of the meeting with the Greens. Thursday`s talks form part of what is likely to be long and difficult round of negotiations to form a new government in Europe`s biggest economy. The possibility of the Greens and the CDU/CSU considering forming a government follows Merkel`s decision to co-opt their policy on abandoning nuclear energy and to promote alternative sources of power. #egyptyard
