Merry Christmas to all. And to all, a good morning. :-) Its a nice time of year to celebrate the holiday but it is unlikely that the birth of Christ occurred on December 25. The date was assigned by Bishop Liberius of Rome in 354 C.E. The most likely month and year would have been March of 6 B.C.E. Christmas was frowned upon in the Americas, particularly by the Calvinist Puritans, who fined anyone 4 shillings for celebrating the holiday. Talk about a war on Christmas! Celebrating Christmas was outlawed throughout the colonies until 1640 - and in New England and New York, much longer than that. Christmas became an official holiday in the U.S. in 1870. Among those who led the way for a religious celebration of Christmas in the Americas were membrs of the Church of England, Lutherans, Quakers and - get this - the Unitarians, who fully embraced the holiday. Mark Twain is said to have had the first Christmas Tree in New England at his home in Hartford CT. Coincidentally, he also had the first telephone in town, which left him with no one to call until the police and the local newspaper editor got their phones. Be healthy. Be happy.
