Merseyside named one of most congested areas for traffic in North America and Europe Merseyside has been named as one of the most congested areas in North America and Europe. The traffic-data company Inrix said Liverpool and its surrounding area was more heavily congested than cities and regions including New York, Chicago, ‘Greater Birmingham’ and Amsterdam. It ranked Merseyside 15th in the top 100 congested metropolitan areas over the past 12 months. To draw up the list Inrix looked at its records of real-time traffic on every road segment during peak hours, from 6am to 10am and 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday, to see how the actual speed every 15 minutes related to how fast traffic would have been if the road were free-flowing. Data analysts then added together all the congested segments in a given city and averaged it to create a score for that city. To calculate the total number of hours wasted minutes in traffic, the firm looked at an estimated typical commuter trip length, and the number of trips taken each year. Inrix estimated that commuters in Merseyside waste a whopping 39 hours sat in traffic each year. And it awarded Merseyside a score of 21.5 – just eclipsing New York at 21.3.
