Mescalero Apache One of my favorites as I lived near theyre reservation, and worked for the Forest Service in Lincoln National Forest, Smokey Bear Station, yes this is where they rescued the Smokey who was clenching onto a tree during a forest fire. Occasionally we would come along some of the remnants left behind in the mountains surrounding their area. Indian paintings in caves and such with plenty creeks with beautiful waterfalls. Oh the memories! Beautiful country in New Mexico, Capitan & Ruidoso area. The tribe is federally recognized as the Mescalero Apache Tribe. Mescalero (or Mescalero Apache) is an Apache tribe of Southern Athabaskan Native Americans. The tribe is federally recognized as the Mescalero Apache Tribe of the Mescalero Apache Reservation in southcentral New Mexico. In the nineteenth century, the Mescalero opened their reservation to other Apache bands, such as the Chiricahua who had been imprisoned in Florida, and the Lipan Apache
