Message from Mike Ruttan: I am putting my experience, leadership skills, and vision before the people of Port Alberni in the 2014 election for mayor. I was born and raised in the Alberni Valley. I attended UBC and Simon Fraser University, and spent a few years teaching in Whitehorse before returning here to teach and raise my family. I had the privilege of being principal of Alberni District Secondary School for 6 years. In this position I was responsible for a complex budget and a large, diverse staff. During the construction of the new ADSS, a multi-year School District 70 initiative, I chaired numerous planning and design committees, communicated regularly with Ministry of Education officials, and worked with staff to ensure a smooth transition to the new LEED Gold building. One of my goals as principal was to increase educational opportunities for students. I was instrumental in developing a new education centre for forestry training and stewardship. I worked with ministry officials, the school district, and school staff to develop provincially acclaimed programs, such as trades training and academic supports for students. These entrepreneurial initiatives have yielded both academic and fiscal benefits for the school and District. Port Alberni is looking for change. The next four years are crucial for our future. The growth of our community is dependent upon a diverse and vibrant economy. We need equitable supports for business, a tax structure that welcomes investment, fiscal responsibility, and thorough long-term planning for infrastructure. We need to build those relationships within our city that help us achieve our common goals. Together we can make change happen.
