Michael Stipe and I are co-chairing the PS 122 Spring Gala - TopicsExpress

Michael Stipe and I are co-chairing the PS 122 Spring Gala honoring the NEA 4 on May 12th. Several of my personal heroes :Holly Hughes, Tim Miller, and John Fleck will be in attendance. Karen Finley is unable to attend due to a prior commitment in Europe. Neil Patrick Harris, and Lance Horne are scheduled to perform along with a raft of other amazing artists. This will be a MAJOR fundraising event for an institution that basically put performance art on the map in New York City. Weve been given the historical Diamond Horseshoe underneath The Paramount Hotel for the night. The Diamond Horseshoe is a space where Billy Rose used to put on his extravaganzas and it has recently been re-done into a show palace of epic proportions by Simon Hammerstein. The history of the space is rich. Maybe you know of Billy Rose from some of those Barbra Streisand/Fanny Brice movies. The space is also the venue where the friends of Andy Warhol gathered to party after his memorial service. Its LEGENDARY! I think this will be an unmissable event. Of course, glamorous architecture and opulence aside, we are really gathering to raise funds for PS 122. This non-profit organization created by artists for artist has struggled to remain afloat since the very beginning and has weathered attacks from the government, the media, the loss of many of its artists to AIDS and the gentrification of the East Village and still PS 122 continues to thrive! As we prepare a new season and our historical building on 9th St. and First Avenue continues its extraordinary transformation we need the help of our supporters and friends now more than ever. Please come honor PS 122 and these four brave, brilliant, and controversial artists whose vision and talent were such a threat to mainstream moral values that they were singled out for persecution by the U.S. government. Nevertheless, they stood firm. With moral conviction and the support of friends and the community of artists who rallied around them they continued to thrive and expand the boundaries where performance and politics intercepted. Therefore Holly, Tim, John and Karen remain invaluable leaders who transformed American Culture and paved the way for all of us. I hope you can join us on May 12th to celebrate these remarkable visionaries. Love, Vivian
