Michelle / Berlin Berlin has this way, this way about making grey seem like a multitude of colour. It’s like the rubbish has been artfully placed along that path, and this shitty tag is a Monet. I think that’s what I like most about the place, it’s how unashamedly ugly it is. It’s like that person who intrigues the hell out of you because they’re so damn charming without an ounce of conventional beauty. I have this route I walk to my regular haunt, and the poles along the way are just plastered with posters, plastered so much so it’s essentially papier-mâché. They’re thick and wildly colourful amongst the grey on grey, and I never tire of the sight. Then at the end there’s this tree, it’s currently naked, but with birds that dance almost like leaves, and presently nestling a stout Christmas tree in its branches – I have to love the person that placed it there. And there’s just something in seeing an old lady walk under a graffiti clad building – and that’s the best bit, the graffiti. This city is a canvas. Some of it is damn near awful, but I like that it’s there, I like to think about that person that stopped and thought “this is where shezza waz”. I love that, I really do. It’s a city constantly under construction; it’s littered with trees and growing with cranes. It’s really complex in its likeability but mostly I just think it’s so damn ugly that it wraps right round to being gorgeous. That’s what it is, gorgeous.
