Micro Traxion brake review Since reading about the better efficiency of using a progressive capture pulley as a brake (thank you Sayar) I have wanted to try rigging with one. And I finally got my hands on a Micro Traxion. Did have some concerns about being able to release it and even Sayar’s You Tube video seemed cumbersome, at best, so I devised an ‘emergency release’ backup to put on the non-tensioning end in case of any problems releasing. The Test: A 180’ line with 3.5’ sag (with my 200 lbs!) was setup to test ease of tensioning and de-tensioning. The conclusion: this is a major improvement to reduce the force needed to tension a slackline. AND it’s so easy to pull, even at relatively high tension, that you can de-tension by just pulling back on the line with one hand and releasing the Traxion with the other, let out the line until the multiplier gets to the pulley, reset the Traxion, reset the multiplier and repeat. A little tedious but not a problem compared to the benefits. So benefits to using a micro traxion in MY setup: 1) much easier tensioning than with a grigri 2, 2) weighs half of what a grigri weighs (175gr to 85 gr), 3) allows you to use 8mm cord to tension which drops another 1.5lbs off my setup, 4) de-tensioning was very controllable and the multiplier (and even the ascension rope pull) act as safety’s against uncontrolled release. The down side of the Traxion: 1) not as strong as a a grigri 2 so the line is just for walking (not good for a trick line), 2) …… can’t think of anything else right now. Anyway, thanks to Jerry’s new anchors, and now changing to this brake and 8mm rope my 180’ slackline setup backpack is now down to 16lbs of carrying weight. Excellent!
