Midday meal deaths: Nitish Kumar blames it on opposition CM Nitish Kumar on Monday directly accused opposition parties - the RJD and BJP - for their complicity in the conspiracy that led to the death of at least 23 schoolchildren at their school after consuming insecticide-laced midday meal at DharmashatiGandaman village in Saran district on Tuesday last. "I just want to tell them (the opposition) that they should not test our patience with their conspiracies," Nitish told the party cadres from eight Lok Sabha constituencies at his residence during a discussion on the current political situation, particularly after the decision of the JD (U) to sever its ties with the BJP. At least three MPs besides Rajya Sabha member Sabir Ali were present at the meeting. Maintaining that similar incidents might be enacted in future, the CM asked the party cadres to remain alert and said, "I will not sleep and remain awake to keep a close vigil on the situation and ensure that people of Bihar sleep in peace." He added, "Our apprehension of conspiracy has been vindicated by the forensic report, which confirmed the poison theory." The party just out of power is desperate on how to get back, he said, adding, "The attitude of two parties is very unfortunate." Briefing the media about the deliberation, party spokesmen Sanjay Singh, Rajiv Ranjan Prasad and Navin Arya the CM was pained over the midday meal tragedy lamented and the politics being played by the opposition parties, who called for Saran bandh on the very next day of the incident causing a lot of inconvenience and damage to public property. "We have to be very careful because the BJP and RJD are working like allies and the Saran bandh call given by them is one example," Nitish said. "The people gave us the mandate to govern the state but our ally (BJP) tried to impose its hidden agenda," he alleged. The party cadres had come from Valmikinagar, Purvi Champaran, Paschim Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Jhanjharpur and Supaul parliamentary constituencies, of which four are represented by the JD (U).
