Mike Huckabee~ Mark Twain once said, “Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it.” The same goes for tax reform… Nobody tries to fix our 70,000-page tax code because any proposal gets sliced to pieces by those who claim they want tax reform, but really want only to protect their own tax status. Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, chairman of the House Ways & Means Committee, presented a proposal last week that has both liberals and conservatives all a-flitter. It would simplify the tax code, reduce tax brackets from seven to three, and make it so 95 percent of taxpayers could use a short form. It would lower rates, while eliminating some deductions and adding a surtax on high incomes. Most conservatives like the lower rates, but not ending the deductions. Some condemned the plan for not cutting spending, but spending isn’t the responsibility of Camp’s committee, they just figure out how to raise money. But like it or not, at least, Dave Camp is trying to do SOMETHING about our insane tax code. Let he who has done likewise cast the first stone. Personally, I still prefer the fair tax. That would eliminate the IRS, and tax consumption instead of punishing productivity, investment and savings. But until we can get there, I’d support “something,” instead of living with the current chaos of 70,000 pages of tax code that no one understands, all the time while talking about tax reform. I’d love to get rid of the horrible winter weather we’ve had this year, but even more, I’d really like to get rid of the IRS and its criminal conduct of playing politics with the law and the tax code that chokes the life out of our economy. * Chart on federal tax under FairTax based on what you spend on new goods and service below the poverty level ceiling wage factored in: fairtaxer/2011/11/23/fairtax-your-effective-tax-rate/
