Millions of Americans who grew up listening to Casey Kasem s voice on the American Top 40 Countdown hold the beloved broadcaster in a warm place in their hearts. Kasem, now 82, retired from broadcasting years ago, but battles over his care and treatment have recently brought him back into national spotlight. At issue is who gets to care for the now incapacitated former broadcaster as he suffers from a form of dementia. Kasem s Dementia In October of 2013, Kasem s family members revealed that he had been diagnosed with Lews body disease, a form of dementia similar to Parkinson s disease. Though Lews body disease is not widely well-known, it is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer s disease. The progressive and degenerative medical condition does not have a cure, though there are some treatments for addressing some of the symptoms.
