Milton Myths & Rumours... With only 10 days to go before election day I want to answer some of the persistent rumours that some candidates and I hear almost everyday and the answers to them. Here is my top 5 list. 1.City? Milton is not a city and there is no plans to rename the TOWN OF MILTON as it would only cost taxpayers to replace the town signage, equipment markings and letterheads. The Town only receives about 2% of its funding from the province and renaming the Town makes no difference in funding etc. At present there are 4 municipalities in Ontario that are larger than Milton that are still called Towns and they have no plans to change the name either (see attached) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_100_largest_municipalities_in_Canada_by_population 2. Costco? Sorry Costco fans, there are no applications or approvals for a Costco store in Milton. Any location would need a rezoning application and site plan approval which requires public notices, signage on the property and letters to immediate neighbours. Check milton.ca under Work for economic development news for details on recent announcements of new buildings. 3. Mosque? There is no applications for a new Mosque in the Milton area despite the rumours about various locations. Check the Muslim Association of Milton website for information on the association. miltonmasjid/update-on-progress-of-our-new-property 4. Fairgrounds? This rumour has been going on since the last time the Leafs won the Cup (1967). The Town does not own the fairground property. It is operated by the Halton Agricultural Society which has been in existence since 1853. I have spoken to a number of directors and there is NO plans to sell the property and any proposal would require a number of public notices, signage on the property and at least 3 public meetings and about 3-5 years of applications as the property is zoned OPEN SPACE and has no water/wastewater allocation for any development. Check the fairboard website for information on their activities. miltonfair/ 5. CN Intermodal plan? CN Rail owns about 1100 acres south of Britannia road on both sides of the rail line from 1st line to Tremaine road south to Lower Base Line. CN purchased most of the property in 2001 for a possible intermodal location. CN announced the CANCELLATION of that proposal in January 2008 but still owns the property which they propose for future employment which was DENIED by the Province when they approved the Regional Official Plan known as ROPA38 in 2011. The Region is doing its 5 year review over the next year which this proposal for EMPLOYMENT land could be considered but there is no water/wastewater allocation for this area which could take about 10-15 years before any development as the majority of the 2000+ acre Derry Green employment area east of James Snow Parkway would have to be developed first. If you have any other questions or concerns during this election please contact me at electcolinbest@hotmail and remember election day is Monday October 27th with polls open from 10 am to 8 pm check your voter card or milton.ca under Election 2014 for details.
