Mindanao, the second largest island in the Philippines, experiences continual violence between government forces and minority Muslim rebels trying to establish an independent Islamic state. Muslim groups control four provinces on the island under the name of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), and several Muslim terrorist organizations are active in the area. Muslim terrorists in the Mindanao region believe killing a Christian will gain them entrance into heaven. Islamic terrorists have been responsible for bombings at train stations, on buses and in other areas of Mindanao. They have also burned the homes of hundreds of Christian families and killed dozens of Christians.
