Minimum Wage Challenge Day 1 (recap): As I conclude Day 1 of my week long challenge Im left with a very keen awareness of the fact that my struggle is not the REAL struggle. The fact that Ive paid my rent lets me know that I am not in the same boat as most minimum wage workers. The person that keeps coming to mind is the young woman I met recently at the Homeless shelter in Homestead, FL. She gave me a task...She asks that I let my fellow legislators know that people are hurting and that the current minimum wage is no remedy for that pain. You see she is a mother of 3 who works for Kmart and earns $8.25 per hour, yet she and her family have to stay at a homeless shelter. Her children love school and their mother wants the best for all of them. Shes doing the best she can with what she has, but still struggles to keep her family together. So today, Im dedicating to her and her children. She is the Florida that I represent. The honest, hardworking and dedicated Florida that deserves to be treated with respect by lawmakers who act as though everything is alright. She and her family deserve a better opportunity. So I ask my colleagues to help me. #RaisetheWage #MinWage #WeekofAction
