Miss Manners says: Dress Code at sea isn’t marine science. - TopicsExpress

Miss Manners says: Dress Code at sea isn’t marine science. Formal attire means black tie (dinner suit or tuxedo) for gentlemen, elegant evening or cocktail dress for ladies. (White tie means white bow tie, stiff shirt and tails for gentlemen. Ladies can shake out their ball gowns. This is seriously formal and not usually expected at sea except on rare occasions where specified or for those who want to. Sometimes seen on Transatlantic crossings on the Queens). The vexed term ‘smart casual’ doesn’t mean jeans. Check if you have any doubts. Fine on deck. May not be appropriate in the dining room. Jackets are recommended for dinner, but no ties required.
